However, if youre interested in the creative process, comments from Elton and his bandmates, archival footage of Elton John in his prime, this is a must for Elton John fans. If youre looking for music, this is not what you want. It was filmed primarily in 1972 while Elton and the band were recording "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". This DVD was originally a movie called "Elton John and Bernie Taupin say Goodbye to Norma Jean and other things". Not one song is played without interuption. While the songs are played, all are interepted by interviews. This DVD is a documentary about the making of the music album. This is not at all what I expected when I ordered this DVD.ĭont buy this DVD if you are wanting to hear the music. I wouldnt consider this a music DVD - not a single complete song is played - they are all broken up by interviews and commentary. engineering and writing musicians will relate better to whats going on and will derive more enjoyment out of it, but thats not to say that the average guy wont enjoy it immensely. If you arent a Yellow Brick Road fan, youll not like this and as the emphasis is heavily on the musical aspects of the album i.e. Though I wish more songs were covered on the film, this is still a great piece and youre not likely to find one better on Elton John. Great archival footage from 73 at the chateau in France where they recorded. Elton and Bernie talk about how they wrote the songs and the recording process. The sound engineers sit at the mixing board and isolate tracks on the multitrack masters. ![]() Truly a musicians dream, everyone associated with the recording of the album is interviewed. I own three in the series and have been blown away by all of them. The "Classic Albums" series is by far the best documentary series available on DVD. I have several DVDs in the Classic Albums series and this one on the DVD on Dark Side of the Moon are absolutely the best! If youre a guitar player Davey Johnstone also shows you how certain guitar parts are played. Loads of interviews with Elton John the band and others. Also contains analysis of the multitrack for selected tracks on the album by the albums producer, Gus Dugdeon. This is a great DVD with loads of archival footage from the recording sessions for Goodbye Yellowbrick Road as well as Elton Johns career leading up to that album.
